Preparatory Prayer

O most merciful Jesus,
with a contrite heart and a penitent spirit,
I bow down in profound humility before your divine majesty.
I adore You as my Supreme Lord and Master.
I believe in You, I hope in You, I love You above all things,
and I am heartily sorry for having offended You,
my supreme and only good.
I resolve to amend my life,
and although I am unworthy to obtain mercy,
yet the sight of your Holy Cross on which You died
inspires me with hope and consolation.
I will therefore meditate on your suffering,
and visit the stations of your Passion
in company with your sorrowful Mother
and my guardian angel
to promote your honor and to save my soul.

I desire to gain the indulgence granted to this holy exercise
(for myself) or (for the suffering souls in Purgatory).

Note: The following is an excerpt from the Handbook of Indulgences, Third Edition (1986, the current edition). It can be found in the section called “The Grants”, #63, “Stations of the Cross”.

A plenary indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who devoutly make the Stations of the Cross. This devout exercise of the Stations of the Cross helps renew our remembrance of the sufferings that our Divine Redeemer underwent on His journey from Pilate’s praetorium, where He was condemned to death, to Mount Calvary, where for our salvation He died on the Cross.
